Derek A. Ramel has been one of the the driving forces to advance our sport in Illinois for the past 30 years. He is respected as the master of creativity & sport logic.
He is one of the earliest ICCA contributors as an instructor, speaker and board member. He has also judged past ICCA Championships, UDA & NCA Nationals and served as Head Official at the first IHSA State Finals.
Since the late 80s, he has consistently mentored most of the championship programs in this state. He began by coaching Romeoville to become Illinois' first Large Varsity National Grand Champion (1987 & 1988) and the first to succeed with the intricate & fast-paced style we still see today.
He also helped develop our state's first successful competitive coed programs and provided the first professional choreography service in Illinois.
In the 90's, Derek produced Illinois' most successful collegiate program -- Northern Illinois -- the only Division 1A Finalist to place Top 10 at both UCA/NCA in the same year, the first "standing full" at UCA Nationals (ESPN) and 10 National Partner Stunt Finalist couples.
He has mentored various other collegiate programs (Iowa, Wisconsin, SIU, Northwestern, Notre Dame). He has also helped guide some to their first appearances at Nationals (Michigan State, U of I Competitive) and some to their highest rankings in their school's history (UIC, Illinois State, Purdue).
He established the educational company SuperCDA for progressive leadership in building Illinois' potential. He also founded the first-ever short-season all star program (SUPER) -- the first of its kind to win a major national title.
He was the first to advocate detailed rubrics and transparent scoring in our state and continues to challenge pageant-style scoring with finite math solutions to help legitimize our sport.
Derek also created the first head-to-head competitive cheerleading format now known as STUNT/Acrobatics & Tumbling. Illinois teams were the first to compete this format at SUPER Camps!
He is truly a pioneer that has influenced many from this state to launch their own success -- several of whom now coach, officiate, choreograph, speak at conferences, own their own gyms or work for other companies.
Currently, DEREK continues his legacy by providing the live broadcast of all 100 teams at the IHSA State Finals and has increased his commitment to work 1:1 with aspiring teams throughout Illinois.
